I returned to my hometown just after the record rains of Hurricane Harvey diminished and the gasoline shortage subsided. Days after the downpour stopped, flooding remained in the worst hit areas of Southeast Texas. Piles of refuse lined every road, for weeks and months after, where victims gutted there houses and left the garbage in front yards, awaiting cleanup from city services. When the drama of the news story is over, the hard work remains and people have no choice but to get to work and rebuild their homes.
